Diode

Diodes are the simplest form of semiconductor. Semiconductors are used to control the direction of the electron. Diodes have two terminals of Anode and Cathode. Resistance to the flow direction from Anode to Cathode very small, whereas for the direction of flow from Cathode to Anode very big. So that the diodes can be used as an electron valve direction. Electrons can pass through the diode in one direction (Anode to Cathode) but not in the reverse direction.

The types of diodes and their use include:

Zener:
As a barrier and determinant of stress. You can make a voltage regulator that is easy and inexpensive by using zener diodes.
Light Emitting Diode (LED) When energized, all semiconductors emit infrared rays. LEDs produce light that can be viewed.
Silicon Controlled Rectifier (SCR)
SCR is an electronic switch that can control AC or DC current. SCR is usually found in light dimmer circuit.
Rectifier
Rectifier current function as a rectifier (AC to DC). Rectifiers are usually better known as a diode as rectifier currents of the diode is the basic function, but more specifically is a function of the rectifier.
Bridge Rectifier
Consists of four rectifier associated with each other (form a box formation). Menyearahkan Bridge rectifier current (AC to DC) with more efficiently.

Diodes in value by two criteria, namely:
  • Peak Inverse Voltage (PIV) rating. Indicates the maximum working voltage of these diodes, for example if the value of a 100V diode, these diodes can not be used in voltage more than 100V.
  • Current rating. Shows the maximum current that can pass through a diode.
Diodes identified with industry standard numbering system. For example 1N4001 rectifier diode has a value of 1.0 PIV 50 volts. 1N4002 has a value of 100 volts, 1N4003 has a value of 200 volts and so on
